🌍 BEYOND ACRO: Cultural Festivals to Catch in August
Nebuta Matsuri | Aomori, Japan | Aug 2–7
Aomori goes full electric for a week as giant illuminated warrior floats storm through the streets, surrounded by drums, dancers, and chants. The final night sends the floats onto the water with fireworks over the bay.
Sinjska Alka | Sinj, Croatia | Aug 9
A centuries-old knights’ tournament where horsemen gallop full speed through town trying to spear a tiny iron ring. It’s Croatian history, pageantry, horses, precision, and local pride packed into one very intense afternoon.
La Tomatina | Buñol, Spain | Aug 26
For one hour, the town of Buñol becomes a tomato battlefield with thousands of people launching overripe tomatoes through the streets.
